Another busy press report for the beginning of September, with Quakers running a range of events including, of course, the iconic Great North Run.

1st September: Quaker mile (Championship Race)

This timed event is run by Quakers Running Club with runners completed 4 laps of Eastbourne track. Well done to Quakers who took part and thank you to everyone involved in the organisation including Juliette McLaren for overseeing the evening, Alex Looney and Simon Metcalfe for being time keepers, John Yeomans for videoing and Paul Roberts for the drills and warm up.

Marc Ellis was 1st finisher in 5:22, equalling the club age category record, followed by Alex Mathers (5:44 PB), Dale Chapman (5:45 PB), Graham Looney (5:55 PB), Dave Jones (5:57), Carys Samuel (6:05, PB and club age category  record), Ian Bond (6:25 and club age category record), Ian Hart (6:52, PB and club age category record), Steve Howell (6:56), Amy Storey (7:09), Chris Clark (7:19 PB), Simon Rek (7:22 PB), Julie Russell (7:23), Kate Shaw (7:30 and set PB), April Corbett (7:35), Anthony Corbett (7:39), Helen Clark (7:52), Darren Alderson (7:57), Lisa Jenkins (8:08 & set PB) and Paul Roberts (8:14).

Please note that these results will not be recorded on Power of 10.

3rd September: Autumn Coast Road 5k, Redcar

This race is the final of the Coast Road race series organised by New Marske Harriers. The course is a flat, fast, two-lap road circuit along the scenic Coast Road, starting from Redcar Rugby Club and heading North along the flat tarmac Coast Road with the North Sea on the right, turning near the roundabout before Majuba Road, before repeating the same stretch and back to the Rugby Club.

Rob Gillham finished the race in 22:33, followed by Diane Vaughan (24:38 and 3rd in age category) and Bex Stirland (37:25).

3rd September: Darlington Trail Harrogate Hill 5k

This event organised by Darlington Trail was described as a ‘fast and flat course ideal for both PB chasers or new runners’. This ‘out and back’ from Glebe Road included one lap of a field. A percentage of entry fees were donated to If U Care Share Foundation & The Harvey McWilliams Foundation.

Jeff Marriott completed the route in 33:04.

4th September: Muddy Roads – HMP Kirklevington – Race 5 (3.5 miles)

The course starts on flat tarmac road and heads straight along the road before turning at the fence and on grass around the perimeter of the Prison. Runners go along trail path and through woodland before crossing the road and back onto the grass, staying left with 2 full loops of the outer perimeter. Once heading back on the big 2nd loop, runners take a right turn straight through the high metal gates into the Prison grounds and left along the tarmac before doing a full lap of the field inside the prison. Once off the field, runners head back towards the start on the tarmac road to the finish. No watches or mobile phones are permitted and the event is chip timed.

Rob Dent was first Quaker finisher in 7th place overall and 2nd in age category* in 22:15, followed by Carys Samuel (25:02 and 1stin age category*), Abbie Jones (27:06 and 3rd in age category*), April Corbett (29:24), Simon Rek (30:26), Anthony Corbett (30:52), Chris Clark (31:08), Helen Clark (33:11) and Berni Gibson (37:10).

* First 3 finishers are excluded from age results.

6th September: parkruns – Albert (Middlesbrough) & Heritage Coastal Path (Easington)  

At Albert parkrun, Graham Looney achieved a PB of 20:49, shaving 1 minute and 13 seconds off his previous in May of this year, whilst at Heritage Coastal Path, Rob Dent was 6th finisher overall in 20:04 and Rebecca Howard was 2nd female finisher in 23:08.

7th September: Tholthorpe – 10k league race                                             

The attractive course passes through local countryside and finishes on the Village Green by the duck pond. The course is reasonable flat with runners of all abilities encouraged to sign up.

Darren Wright was first Quaker finisher in 38:46, followed by Chris Minto (45:50), Deborah Berry (48:01 & 2nd in age category), Michael Thompson (48:38), Sue Sparrow (48:41 & 2nd in age category), Ian Hart (48:43 & 2nd in age category), Neil Chalmers (48:47), Carys Samuel (49:28), Brian McLaren (51:30), Paul Cockburn (55:34), April Corbett (56:07), Simon Rek (56:09), Anthony Corbett (57:26), Chris Clark (1:00), Helen Clark (1:00), Juliette McLaren (1:00), Sarah Burrows (1:01), John Yeomans (1:01), Ross Edmond (1:02), Darren Alderson (1:05) and David Porterfield (1:11).

7th September: Great North Run

Following an iconic city-to-coast route, the Great North Run starts in Newcastle City Centre, before heading over the Tyne Bridge just before the 2-mile mark. Entering Gateshead, runners pass the Gateshead International Stadium, before continuing on towards the coast, making a final turn at the 12-mile point and running along the seafront for the final stretch. The traditional race finish in South Shields, the free in-run pint, music en-route, post-race fish and chips, ‘that’ view as runners reach the final mile and fantastic local support! Well done to everyone that took part, whether it was for a fast time, first time or raising lots money for charity. (We’ll just not mention the medal!)

7th September: Vale of York 10k (Half Marathon also available)

Set in the heart of Yorkshire’s countryside, the Vale of York 10K returned in 2025 with its signature blend of flat terrain, scenic vistas, and PB-chasing potential.

Abbie Jones completed the race in 45:44 and 3rd in age category, and Diane Vaughan in 49:04 and 1st in age category.

13th September: park runs – Albert (Middlesbrough) and Frickley Country (West Yorkshire)

At Albert parkrun, Abbie Jones was 3rd female finisher in 21:31 and also achieved a new PB, shaving 9 seconds off her time from January this year. At Frickley Country parkrun, Dave Jones was 7th finisher overall in 21:08.

Rachel Grayson completed her 25th volunteer milestone.

13th September: Great Westmoreland Trail Race

This event is described as a scenic marked route over rolling fell land on trails and footpaths. With a climb of 1312ft, it has stunning views of both Eden and Lune Valleys, starting and finishing in Crosby Garrett, near Kirby Stephen.

Lou Trainor completed the race in 1:14 and 1st in age category and Rachel Grayson in 1:33 and 3rd in age category.

13th September: Sutton Bank Sizzler

This 7 mile circular race starts and finishes at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre near Thirsk and features a mix of runnable sections and technical climbs, including the infamous Sutton Bank ascent. Runners navigated through forested trails and open moorland, with panoramic views (for those who arrived early enough to catch the sunset). The glow-stick markers add a surreal beauty to the course, guiding runners through the darkness.

Rebecca Dodd completed the route in 1:42 and Karen Dove in 2:11.

14th September: Wild Deer Raby Castle (5 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles and Canicross events)

These races offer mixed terrain with some rough trails, firm paths, grass paths and woodland and allow runners to experience the Castle and grounds in all its glory.

In the 5 mile race, Chris Clark finished in 47:25, followed by Julie Russell (47:58 & set PB) and Berni Gibson (57:28 & set PB); whilst in the 15 mile race, Dan Rushton-Orton finished in 1:31 and in the 5 mile Canicross event, Helen Clark (and Toby) finished in 3rd place overall, 2nd female and 2nd in age category in 44:24.

14th September: Caledonia Park 5k

Starting in Gretna, this road race is an ‘out and back’ that takes runners on a tour of the area around the Scottish-English border.

John Harrison set his PB for 5k, completing the race in 23:19.

14th September: Wetherby 10k (Championship Race)

This race is described as a ‘cracking little Yorkshire run’, and is a flat, fast and scenic 10k

Marc Ellis was first Quaker finisher in 8th place overall and 1st in age category in 36:46, followed by Billy Harris (45:38), Ian Hart (46:57 and 2nd in age category), Carys Samuel (48:17), April Corbett (51:26 and 2nd in age category), Anthony Corbett (54:40), and Phil and Lesley Neale (56:46).

14th September: Sedgefield Serpentine (6.5 miles)

Organised by Sedgefield Harriers Club, this is a scenic off-road route of approximately 10k on beautiful paths and trails around Hardwick Park & Bishop Middleham.

Jeff Marriott completed the event in 61:08.

Well done to Rob Dent, Carys Samuel, April Corbett and Sandra Cass who received prizes for being 1st in the Summer Series of events in their age categories.

parkrun

Congratulations and well done to QRC members that have achieved ‘unofficial’ parkrun milestones and personal challenges over the last fortnight!

Well done to our parkrun tourists who took part at the Heritage Coastal Path at Easington on 6th September.

The next one will be at Riverside (Chester-le-Street) on 4th October.

Riverside parkrun course description:

Almost three full laps of the park. The start of the run can be seen from the main car park in Riverside Park. You walk towards the children’s play area to the start, which is around 25 metres from the car park area. The parkrun start location is adjacent to the toilets and café (unfortunately the café is normally not open).
