Another busy press report for the beginning of September, with Quakers running a range of events including, of course, the iconic Great North Run.

1st September: Middlesbrough 10k
This fairly flat course takes in local landmarks including the Transporter Bridge, Albert Park, Teesside University, MIMA and the Riverside Stadium.
Michael Kipling was first Quaker finisher in 39:07, followed by Diane Vaughan (46:46), Isaac Johnson-Caddell (44:01), Dave Murphy (44:09 PB), Ian Burgess (47:47), Ian Hart (48:37), Lucy Coxon (49:01), Dan Orton (49:28), David Nalder (49:29 and 2nd in age category), Stephen Ash (50:03), Alex Looney (50:42 PB), Paul Cockburn (54:29 PB), Carmelita Coco (55:55), Helen Clarke (57:07), Jo Meynell (57:20), David Whittle (57:24), Steve Pollock (58: 53), Mel Newton (59:39), Sarah Burrows (1:00), Bryan Dale (1:00), Lesley Neal (1:02), Ian Young (1:04), Lucy Bendle (1:06), Fiona Dixon (1:13) and Kylie Rushton (1:22).
2nd September: Quaker mile (Championship race)
This timed event is run by Quakers Running Club with runners completed 4 laps of Eastbourne track. Well done to Quakers who took part at Juliette, Brian and Jakob McLaren and Paul Roberts for organising.

4th September: Autumn Coast Road 5k, Redcar
This race is the final of the 2024 Coast Road race series organised by New Marske Harriers which takes place on the sea front at Redcar.
Dave Jones was first Quaker home in 19:51, followed by Lou Trainor (21:34), Ian Burgess (22:43 PB), Carys Samuel (22:56 set PB time), Rob Gillham (22:56), Abbie Jones (22:58 and set PB time), Diane Vaughan (22:12), Helen Clark (25:45 PB) and Rebecca Devine (26:01 set PB time)
5th September: Muddy Roads – HMP Kirklevington – Race 5 (Championship Race) 3.5 miles
The course starts on flat tarmac road and heads straight along the road before turning at the fence and on grass around the perimeter of the Prison. Runners go along trail path and through woodland before crossing the road and back onto the grass, staying left with 2 full loops of the outer perimeter. Once heading back on the big 2nd loop, runners take a right turn straight through the high metal gates into the Prison grounds and left along the tarmac before doing a full lap of the field inside the prison. Once off the field, runners head back towards the start on the tarmac road to the finish. No watches or mobile phones are permitted and the event is chip timed.
Lou Trainor was 1st Quaker finisher, 3rd female and 1st in age category in 25:38, followed by Rob Gillham (26:38), Dave Murphy (26:42 and 3rd in age category), Diane Lockhart (27:50 and 1st in age category), Chris Clark (28:49), Helen Clark (30:09) and Wendy Colling (30:34 and 3rd in age category).
6th September: Great North 5k
This is a fast and flat 5k around the Quayside.
Dani Walker completed the route in 21:48 (PB set)
7th September: parkruns – Hackworth (Shildon), Darlington South Park
At Hackworth parkrun, Rob Dent was 1st finisher overall in 20:56 and Wendy Colling was 3rd female in 26:48, whilst at Darlington South Park, Stephen Smedley bagged himself a new PB (his 8th this year) of 36:47, shaving 18 seconds off his time last month.
7th September: Great Westmoreland Trail Race
This event is described as a scenic marked route over rolling fell land on trails and footpaths. With a climb of 1312ft, it has stunning views of both Eden and Lune Valleys, starting and finishing in Crosby Garrett, near Kirby Stephen.
Lou Trainor completed the race in 1:14 and 1st in age category.
7th September: Dalesrunner40
At 40km, the DR40 is the final and longest race of the Dales Runner series. With over 3,000ft of ascent and featuring hard packed trail, the course requires strategy, consistency and stamina. Run over less technical terrain than the first two races in the series, the route takes runners over Stake Moss with spectacular views over to Buckden Pike. It then follows a beautiful section of the Dales Way along the River Wharfe, a section of Roman road and a trip around Weather Fell before descending towards Semerwater.
Hayley Addison finished the race in 6:06 and 2nd in age category.
7th September: Lakeland Trails Derwentwater Trail Race (5k and 10k also available)
Starting and finishing at Fitz Park in Keswick, the circuit is along well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways, taking in panoramic views of Derwentwater, the surrounding peaks of Skiddaw and Blencathra, as well as the northern fells.
Rebecca Howard completed the 15k trail race in 1:36.
8th September: Tholthorpe – 10k league race
The attractive course passes through local countryside and finishes on the Village Green by the duck pond. The course is reasonable flat with runners of all abilities encouraged to sign up.
Scott Beaumont was first Quaker to finish in 44:27, followed by Lou Trainor (46:23 and 2nd in age category), Michael Thompson (48:00), Ian Burgess (50:30), Emily Beaumont (51:27 PB), April Corbett (51:58), Diane Lockhart (53:27), Paul Cockburn (55:08), Carmelita Coco (55:27), Anthony Corbett (57:05), Darren Alderson (57:52) and John Yeomans (1:07).
8th September: Great North Run
Following an iconic city-to-coast route, the Great North Run starts in Newcastle City Centre, before heading over the Tyne Bridge just before the 2-mile mark. Entering Gateshead, runners pass the Gateshead International Stadium, before continuing on towards the coast, making a final turn at the 12-mile point and running along the seafront for the final stretch.
The traditional race finish in South Shields, the free in-run pint, music en-route, post-race fish and chips, ‘that’ view as runners reach the final mile and fantastic local support! Well done to everyone that took part, whether it was for a fast time, first time or raising lots money for charity.

8th September: Vale of York Half Marathon (10k also available)
This event is described as ‘for the novice runner, a perfect introduction to a longer distance and for the more seasoned racer, it remains a genuine PB opportunity’.
Congratulations to Michael Kipling who earned himself a new PB, shaving 50 seconds off his previous PB, to finish in 1:24 and Rebecca Devine set a base PB of 1:59.
11th September: Darlington Trail Harrogate Hill 5k
This event organised by Darlington Trail was described as a ‘fast and flat course ideal for both PB chasers or new runners’. This ‘out and back’ from Glebe Road included one lap of a field. A percentage of entry fees were donated to If U Care Share Foundation & The Harvey McWilliams Foundation.
Ian Burgess completed the route in 24:49.
14th September: park runs – Sedgefield, Darlington South Park, Marshall Drive (Brotton), Jubilee (Spennymoor) and Hamsterley Forest
At Sedgefield, Helen Clark celebrated her 100th parkrun, finishing in 26:38, whilst at Darlington South Park, Rachel Grayson achieved a new PB of 26:06, shaving 31 seconds off her previous PB in June of this year and Stephen Smedley knocked another 59 seconds off last weeks’ time with a new PB of 35:48.
At Marshall Drive, April Corbett was 10th finisher overall and 2nd female in 26:56 and at Jubilee, Rob Dent was 4th finisher overall in 21:23, whilst at Hamsterley Forest, David Aiken was 4th finisher overall in 21:44 and Rebecca Howard was 2nd female finisher in 23:32 and also had the highest female age grade!
15th September: Wetherby 10k (Championship Race)
This race is described as a ‘cracking little Yorkshire run’, and is a flat, fast and scenic 10k
Marc Ellis was the first Quaker to finish in 37:03 and 1st in age category, followed by Martyn Farnsworth (42:27 and set PB), Rob Gilham (44:52), Lou Trainor (45:59), Ian Hart (48:09 and 2nd in age category), Carys Samuel (48:24 PB), Darren Alderson (56:27) and Helen Clark (56:45).
15th September: Wild Deer Raby Castle (5 miles, 10 miles or 15 miles)
These races offer mixed terrain with some rough trails, firm paths, grass paths and woodland and allow runners to experience the Castle and grounds in all its glory.
In the 5 mile race, Zoe Robinson finished in 1:00 whilst in the 15 mile race, Dawn Richardson finished in 3rd place overall, 1st female and 1st in age category in 1:50.
15th September: Humber Coastal and 10k (Half Marathon also available)
This 10k course is a flat and fast course on roads, coastal paths and promenade with fabulous coastal views.
Gill Wallis completed the race in 1:22.

15th September: Locomotion 10k (Darlington Trail Series)
Suitable for all abilities, this was race 3 and the final of the 10k series with this race starting in Middleton St George.
Ian Burgess completed the race in 54:03.
15th September: Sedgefield Serpentine (6.5 miles)
Organised by Sedgefield Harriers Club, this is a scenic off-road route of approximately 10k on beautiful paths and trails around Hardwick Park & Bishop Middleham.
Rob Gillham was first Quaker finisher in 47:03, followed by David Nalder (52:32 and 2nd in age category) and Helen Clark (56:54).
15th September: Acorn Bank 10k (Temple Sowerby, Cumbria)
The race starts and finishes in the beautiful grounds of the Acorn Bank National Trust Property and is described as ‘an undulating road race (with a few challenging hills!) that will suit all abilities’.
Janet Bowlby completed the event in 58:47.
15th September: Malton 10k
The 10k course starts and finishes in Malton Market Place and along the route runners take in stunning Yorkshire countryside including a section of the Howardian Hills (Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and run along Richard Fahey’s famous gallops, where plenty of winning racehorses have been trained.
Alex Mathers completed the event in 50:54.

Well done to our parkrun tourists who took part at Hackworth, Shildon this month. The next one will be at Whinlatter Forest on 21st September.
Whinlatter Forest parkrun:
A hilly run through Whinlatter Forest Park taking in the beautiful scenes of Derwentwater and the surrounding mountain ranges. One lap with a loop, using trail surfaces, the start and end are close to the main car park. The course may not be suitable for buggies – please contact the team in advance for further advice on the course.
