Another fortnight of fabulous running by QRC members. Lots to celebrate – running near and far, top 10 race finishes, top 3 female and male finishes, personal bests, smashing age categories, competing in championship and league races, cross country and earning the major’s coveted 6 star medal, to name just a few.

2nd November – parkruns – Flatts Lane, Darlington South Park and Cyclopark (Kent)

At Flatts Lane, Dave Jones finished in 2nd place overall and also 2nd male finisher in 21:43 and Paul Cockburn completed his 100th parkrun milestone in 31:31, whilst at Darlington South Park, Dawn Richardson was first lady finisher in 20:15 and at Cyclopark, Rebecca Howard was first lady finisher in 20:40.

2nd November:  Fox Rush Farm Cross Country

Ladies and Vet 65 men ran 5.8km (2 laps) whilst Sen/Vet men ran 8.km (3 laps) at Fox Rush Farm Community Woodland at Redcar.

Lou Trainor was first Quaker female finisher in 27:50 and 2nd in age category followed by Deborah Berry (29:13), Lisa Bowerbank (31:11), Lucy Coxon (33:54), Julie Russell (35:50), Melissa Hird (36:08), Carmelita Coco (37:03) and Lisa Jenkins (39:18).

In the U20, Senior and Vet men, Dave Jones was first Quaker male finisher in 37:13, followed by Darren Wright (38:14), Alex Mathers (38:36), Rob Dent (39:34), Michael Thompson (43:47), Chris Clark (50:19) and Paul Cockburn (54:32).

2nd November: Kilburn Kanter

This LDWA event is a 24 mile Challenge Walk with 3,5000ft of ascent in the Hambleton Hills. Entrants must follow the route and visit all 5 checkpoints within the 10 hour cut off.

David Thompson completed the event in 5:43

3rd November: Guy Fawkes 10 miles

This is a hilly 10 mile run starting and finishing at Ripley Castle with entrants tackling Birstwith Brute, Swinecliffe Swine and For Fawkes Sake. Most of the course is on quiet country roads with a couple of sections on well surfaced bridleway.

James Atkinson was first Quaker finisher in 1:14, followed by Lou Trainor (1:16 and 2nd in age category), Rob Gillham (1:19), Brian Martin (1:20 and 2nd in age category), Steve Snook (1:20 and 3rd in age category), Abbie Jones (1:21*), Ian Hart (1:24), Dan Orton (1:25), Carys Samuel (1:26), Ian Burgess (1:27), Ray Reed (1:30 PB), Emily Beaumont (1:30), Sandra Cass (1:32), David McLachlan (1:34), Sandra Martin (1:38), Gill Colling (1:38), Sue Sparrow (1:38*), David Ledgerwood (1:39), Rachel Grayson (1:43*), Gilly Cowton (1:45), Sarah Watson (1:46), Helen Clarke (1:48), Hannah Alderson (1:48), Brian Cowton (1:50), John Yeomans (1:50*), Pip Rayner (1:53), Julie Russell (1:53), Ross Edmond (1:54*), Lucy Bendle (1:56) and Adele Brown (2:01).

3rd November: The Tommy Run (Championship Race) 5k also available

With a new route for this year, the 10k course is along the beautiful sea front at Seaham on a mixture of paths, promenade and some trail paths. The start and finish are at the Tommy War Memorial statue, a First World War soldier by artist Ray Lonsdale, displayed close to Seaham war memorial, on Terrace Green by the seafront in Seaham, County Durham.

Marc Ellis was first Quaker finisher in 6th place overall and 1st in age category in 38:35, followed by Martyn Farnsworth (44:48 PB), Chris Evans (53:06), David Nalder (53:28, PB and 2nd in age category), Darren Alderson (57:40), Carmelita Coco (57:58), Simon Rek (57:58), Paul Cockburn (1:00), Helen Clark (1:03), Chris Bowe (1:03), Jeff Marriott (1:04), Wendy Colling (1:05), and David Keenan (1:08 and set PB)

3rd November: Derwentwater 10

Starting from the near the George Fisher outdoor shop in Keswick, the route loops for 10miles around Derwent Water in a clockwise direction. It is an undulating route that is entirely on tarmac.

Robert Kirby completed the route in 1:39, followed by Emma Bland (1:42) and Claire Norman (1:48).

3rd November: New York City Marathon

The route starts on the on the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge on Staten Island and takes runners through all five boroughs of New York City, through Brooklyn and then into Queens before entering Manhattan and finishing in Central Park.

Dave Murphy completed the race in 4:17. This was Dave’s 6th and final race of the Abbott Major series, making him the first Quaker to earn the coveted 6 star medal.

9th November: parkrun – Thorp Perrow

At Thorp Perrow David Aiken was 8th finisher overall in 21:11 and Rebacca Howard was 1st female finisher in 22:47.

9th November: Race to Remember tomorrow

This 47 mile race starts at the home of the British Army in Aldershot, through the stunning South Downs National Park and finishes at the iconic Royal Naval Dockyard in Portsmouth at HMS Warrior, to honour the servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much for our nation and making this one of the most poignant challenges of the year.

The race raises vital funds for Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health who provide support and life-changing mental health treatment for veterans from every service and every conflict.

Chris Evans completed the event in 11:21.

9th November: Hardmoors Goathland 10k/Half Marathon/Marathon

Supposedly the most runnable course of the Hardmoors race series and usually very boggy and muddy, these circular races start and finish from Goathland Village Hall,

Emily Beaumont completed the marathon route in 5:28 (3rd female finisher), whilst Hayley Addison completed the half marathon in 3:15, followed by Karen Dove in 5:15. Meanwhile, in the 10k Dave Jones was 3rd finisher overall in the 10k in 1:04 and 1st in age category.

9th November: Newton Road Runners 10k

This race is held in memory of a Newton Road Runner. The route starts at Westburn Hall in Cambuslang and follows the Clyde path for an out and back. The well-maintained tarmac path allows for a fast run with no roads to cross or traffic to contend with. There are a couple of small hills, but the route is predominately flat.

David Ledgerwood spent the day with his Glasgow running family and completed the race in 56:47.

10th November: Heaton Harriers Memorial 10k (10k league race)

The Heaton Harriers Memorial Road Race takes place on a traffic free course on footpaths around Newcastle’s Town Moor.

James Atkinson completed the race in 41:50, followed by Rob Gillham (43:46), Lou Trainor (44:00), Alex Looney (48:27 PB), Emily Beaumont (49:15 PB), April Corbett (50:14), Helen Clark (52:42), Simon Rek (53:02), Carmelita Coco (53:41), Diane Lockhart (54:20) and John Yeomans (55:02 PB).

10th November: Run Hamsterley 5 miles (10 miles also available)

Runners paid their respects with 2 minutes silence before taking on this mixed terrain route in the heart of Hamsterley Forest.

 Berni Gibson completed the 5 mile route in 1:04 (2nd in age category).

 12th November: More than a run at Ormesby Hall night race – winter night series

This was the first of the night series which it suitable for new and experienced trail runners. The route is in the grounds of the National Trust property including Pennyman Woods.

Chris Bowe completed the 5k event in 29:02, followed by Emma Bland (30:02 and 1st in age category), Jeff Marriott (30:22 and 2nd in age category) and Claire Norman (31:00 and 3rd in age category).

Course Description…

The first section is a level trail that follows the Bedburn Beck. The terrain on Windy Bank is short and steep through beautiful mixed woodland high above the valley floor. The route re-joins the Bedburn Beck and continues on forest tracks and trails. There are some inclines and protruding roots, rocks and stones on the trails. Trail shoes with good grip are recommended.
